31st January 2022
2021 was a memorable year for us at City & Essex, we turned 50!
Unfortunately, we have been unable to celebrate this amazing milestone the way we would like to. The safety of our staff, our clients, and the continued service of their buildings is too important.
We keep our fingers crossed that someday soon we can bring the teams together to commemorate the hard work and support of everyone in the business that allowed us to reach our 50th year.
In the meantime, we have celebrated in our own little way. In partnership with Ecologi, we have commissioned the planting of 10,000 trees globally!
We are excited to watch these trees grow over the coming years, and we hope the natural area and ecosystem flourish.
Mangroves in Madagascar
6,250 of these trees have been planted as mangroves in Madagascar. In recent years, vast areas of Madagascar’s forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species, and diminishing local people’s ability to farm and live off the land. Entire mangrove estuaries are also gone, leaving the bare earth to wash away into the sea. These mangrove forests are not only crucial carbon sinks, but they also provide habitats for a wide range of marine species that live in the shallows and provide vital coastal protection from floods and storms.
These mangrove trees capture up to four times the amount of carbon per acre as tropical rainforests, and three quarters of tropical fish rely on their roots for nurseries and shelter.
The projects in this area are run by the Eden Reforestation Project, a non-profit whose mission is to provide fair-wage employment to impoverished villagers as agents of global forest restoration. They hire local people to grow, plant, and guard to maturity the trees planted through funding from the Ecologi Community.

A Brighter Future
Our recent partnership with Ecologi has allowed us to invest in verified projects that can make an immediate and sustained difference to the people and places that really need it.
Reforestation is widely understood as a major natural climate solution. The reforestation projects we fund aren’t certified as carbon offsets. We understand that they may not have an immediate effect, the carbon emissions they will sequester will happen in the future, for the next generations to come. It’s this blend of making reductions today, and planning reductions in the future that is our approach to limiting climate change, and the effect of our business.
Our goal is to be net zero by 2030, but we are confident in reaching this target before then. In the meantime, we are committing to supporting global projects for change and forest restoration. By bringing together nature, technology, and people, we can change for a brighter future.
