Celebrating One Year of Cameron

by Matthew Swift / 18 August 2026
Portrait of Cameron Watson, Head of ESG, celebrating 1 year at City & Essex.

One year ago, Cameron joined City & Essex as Head of ESG. Twelve months on, it’s fair to say he’s made his mark.

Cameron fitted in from day one, quickly getting to know our people, understanding our culture, and sharing our ambition to lead the way in sustainable commercial cleaning. His expertise and enthusiasm have made a real impact ever since, both within our teams and with our customers.

Here’s what Cameron has helped us achieve:

  • Created our first ESG Report, and now steers our ESG strategy.
  • Led us to an EcoVadis Silver rating.
  • Secured approval of our near-term SBTi targets.
  • Led our 2025 carbon reporting.
  • Strengthened supplier engagement around ESG.
  • Established our internal ESG Steering Group.
  • Created more volunteer opportunities for our colleagues.

Quite a first year!

We sat down with Cameron to reflect on the past 12 months.

What’s the achievement you’re proudest of?
“Our EcoVadis Silver rating. EcoVadis independently assesses a company’s environmental, social and ethical performance. Achieving Silver recognised the real progress we’ve made in embedding responsible business practices across the whole organisation, not just in one team.

It was the culmination of a year’s work from the whole business. Interdepartmental collaboration to calculate our KPIs. Redesigning our policies. Building a clear picture of our emissions. Working hand in hand with clients and suppliers. And, above all, supporting our people so they feel empowered to take the next step in their careers.”

What’s been the biggest challenge?
“Designing an ESG strategy ambitious enough to support our clients’ goals, while staying true to who we are: a family-owned cleaning business.

We approached it as a team, identifying the issues most material to us and shaping our KPIs to align with our clients’ objectives. Working directly with our clients’ sustainability teams made that possible, and turned what could have been a tension into a genuine collaboration.”

What excites you most about what’s next?
“The chance to keep pushing our industry forward. Not only in how we support our people and local communities, but in the technology and added value we bring to our clients.

We always say that if we can’t find a solution that supports our people, our customers or the environment, we’ll create one. That attitude has already led to award-winning technologies that help our customers improve their recycling, better understand their carbon footprint, and make more sustainable decisions. It’s what sets us apart in the eyes of our staff and clients alike.”

Here’s to year two
Thank you, Cameron, for everything you’ve brought to City & Essex over the last year, greater structure, visibility and ambition to our ESG journey, while making sure our teams, customers and suppliers are part of it

Happy one year, Cameron! We can’t wait to see what year two brings.
